Mosques in Rajasthan
A mosque is a place of worship for the followers of Islam. The Arabic word masjid literally means a place of prostration. The word "masjid" dedicated for the daily five prayers and the larger masjid Jama where the daily five prayers and the Friday congregational prayers are held with a high volume of attendance.The mosque serves as a place where Muslims can come together for salat (prayer). Rajasthan has never been entirely a Muslim ruled region but from time to time Muslim rulers had ruled it and thus left their impact on the Rajasthani architecture. Both the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal dynasty contributed in the construction of mosques and other Muslim religious sites. Although there are several mosques scattered throughout the state some of them deserve special mention.
Dargah Sharif :- The dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti is probably the most important religious sites of the Muslims here. Built by the Mughals the dargah symbolizes tolerance towards all kinds of religions. Moin-ud-din Chisti was a Sufi saint whose compassion for the poor and the weak made them follow him. He was popularly known as Garib Nawaz.
Adhai din-ka-Jhonpra :- This great mosque was actually a Jain religious college which was damaged by Mohammad Gori. It is popularly believed that the ruined college and parts of some 30 damaged temples were used to build this mosque. The construction was which was completed in two and a half days. Therefore it is known by the name Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra. Later Qutb-ud-din Aibak added a pierced stone screen of seven arches and the ten domes in the roof upheld by 124 columns. Though in ruin now, two broken minarets with Koran inscriptions on the corners above the central high arch of the screen can be seen.
Jama Masjid :- Built in pristine white marble it is one of the many monuments that was constructed by Shah Jahan. It is situated within the campus of the dargah in Ajmer. It is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Rajasthan. This monument enhances the beauty and importance of dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti.
